Imagine taking your dog for a walk and then returning to the house to sit on top of 303 absolutely pure gold bars. Sounds like something out of a James Bond movie, right? In fact, a recent FBI raid that occurred in Virginia has proven that real life can be even crazier than fiction when it comes to the amount of truly hidden wealth (in this case, 303 gold bars worth approximately $40 million and other high end goods) found from a former CIA operative and subsequently led to their arrest — leaving many people to contemplate how it’s even possible in this day and age for a contemporary spy to accumulate a pirate’s treasure trove.
The Weight of Secrecy
In today’s world of financial crime, we think of digital currencies, offshore bank accounts, and all of these other so-called “legal” ways to hide money. Most people do not think about how much physical wealth this former CIA operative had at their disposal (303 gold bars = 27.4 lbs/12.4 kg per bar). Therefore, for each gold bar discovered by the federal agents that raided this former CIA operative’s home, 303 x 27.4 = 8,309.2 lbs (or approximately 4 ton).
It is not only a danger to society, but it is also a major structural problem. Most media outlets are focused on what's going to happen politically, but the logistics of putting gold bars that belong to a CIA guy in a child's bedroom and hiding them under the floor or in drywall without the house collapsing is surreal to the point of disbelief.
Double Life: Spy vs. Suburbanite
One of the things that makes this story a great read is the contrast of where it is. This is not some highly secured facility in some tropical dictatorship; this is a normal house in Virginia.
The suspect used the ultimate method of spy concealment - to hide in plain sight.
Professional Paradox: As an intelligence officer of high rank, going from someone who has been trained to operate in the shadows, blend in with people, and take extreme risks with very sensitive information to hiding and accumulating a cartoon-like mountain of physical gold bricks in a neighbourhood where people have to think about HOA rules is a major psychological disconnect.
A former CIA officer who was arrested during a sting operation is believed to have relied on his understanding of government operations as a way to get away with criminal activity until his arrest. Like many thriller readers have come to know, the larger the secret the more challenging it is to keep it concealed from view men majority of individuals will find and expose. The recent sting has also proven a notable appeal of many paranoid and exceedingly rich individuals for physical assets, as opposed to digital assets. Given the current state of traceable digital footprints and the capability of banks to freeze an asset with a simple mouse click, it becomes obvious gold is a viable solution as an untraceable currency.
Additionally, the investigations relating to the sources of the funds and how they relate to specific crimes committed including false documentation to obtain a government job will continue on. Finally, the theft by physical secure methods an individual committed in prior years is still continuing but with many of these crimes occurring in suburban areas today.
Investigations by federal authorities are still ongoing with many of the documents being released to the public on a daily basis, but the manner in which the building was secured during the crime will leave us with questions. Just how may the day's garages conceal valuable items? Please let us know what your thoughts are about this story and what would you do if you really did possess 303 gold bars?
